Four Tips for Creating a Winning
Gift Basket Home Business

A gift basket home business starts with winning arrangements. Consider every gift basket that you make as a work of fine art. Use these tips to help you create winning gift baskets that will build your business:

1. Always choose a theme. Avoid creating a gift basket that is a hodge-podge of assorted and unrelated items. Instead, pick a theme. Every item that you stock your gift basket with should fall very clearly under the chosen theme. For example, a wine and cheese gift basket could contain a bottle of wine and some small samples of cheese. Other additions may include a pair of wine glasses adorned with charms, table water crackers, a decorative cheese knife, etc. A new-baby gift basket could be stocked with booties, bibs, soothers, a bottle, rattles, baby powder and more. Sometimes a gift basket is ordered for an event rather than a specific person (e.g., a door prize for an office party). Find out what kind of event it is and use that information to direct the theme.

2. Always personalize when possible. Usually a gift basket is ordered with a specific person in mind. Take the time to find out some personal details about the recipient if possible. Ask about some of the person's interests and hobbies. Find out if he or she has favorite brands or products. Most any information that you can get may prove useful in creating a personal, memorable gift basket.

3. Keep a variety of themed items in stock. Sometimes gift baskets are ordered without a specific recipient or event mind. Having a variety of items in stock ensures that you'll meet the needs of a broad customer base. Coffee, tea and spa items are just a few examples of themes with broad appeal. Others include chocolate, popcorn, reading, movies and cooking themes (e.g., an Italian pasta basket). These will work well with many types of crowds and events.

4. The outside is as important as the inside. Take as much care with the outside of your gift basket as you do with the inside. Wrap it carefully with cellophane. Try to avoid using tape if possible, which can spoil the look. You'll probably find that with practice you'll be able to wrap without using tape. If you find you need to close some gaps, use only minimal amounts of ultra-clear tape. Try to tuck the taped areas underneath folds when you can. Tie off the top with curling ribbon, raffia, cloth ribbon or strips, string or jute. Let your imagination go when it comes to wrapping. You can even use embellishments like charms, candy, flowers (real or artificial) and virtually anything else imaginable.

Like anything worth doing, practice makes perfect. The more gift baskets you craft, the more proficient you'll become. Give away your practice baskets as gifts to promote your business. This is a sure-fire way to attract new customers and ensure repeat business. Be sure to take time and care to make each basket unique and individualistic. Every little thing that you add and arrange contributes to a perfect overall "picture."
