The beginning of a New Year brings so many new hopes; the resolve to do something new, better or differently than the way you've been doing things. Often the dawn of a New Year is much of the motivation needed to get you out on that limb that you've been eyeing carefully over the previous year. If that limb represents the idea of starting a new
home business, the time has never been better.
Sometimes people think that January isn't the best time to start a new home business. After all, didn't we just come out of the biggest spending season of the whole year? Why bother in January? There are actually several good reasons why January is the perfect time to start a home business, and New Year's resolutions aside, those reasons may just convince you of that.
* Post-holiday and end-of-season sales. You already know that EVERYTHING gets marked down after Christmas. That includes many of the things that you may need to outfit your home business: printers, fax machines, computers and other office supplies, telephones, promotional gifts and even vehicles. Because January is a slow month for other businesses, they tend to offer better deals than you might find at other times of the year and you can pick up items like signs at reduced prices. You may also find January deals on newspaper advertising space, bulk mail-outs and other forms of publicity and promotion.
* Consumers have more time in January. While it seems that people have more money to spend from October to December, people often have far less time during those months. However, once the Christmas decorations are put away and the New Year's parties wind down, consumers have more time on their hands to shop or solicit services. They will catch up on all those things that they didn't have time for during the holiday season. People are much more open to hearing about your products or services after the holiday rush is over.
* YOU usually have more time in January. You're a consumer too, so the above statement applies to you as much as everyone else. January is a great time to take care of all of those details that need to be addressed when starting a home business; obtaining a business license, making operations purchases, wooing potential clients, etc.
* Many consumers set aside money for January spending. Not everyone goes broke in December. If fact, a large percentage of holiday shoppers report that they save or set aside money to take advantage of the deals that are available in January. Many home-based businesses actually do very well in January. In fact, a number of home business owners cite January as one of their top five sales months of the year.
* You won't be overwhelmed. Starting a business in, say, October or November can be overwhelming. You're suddenly in the throes of a major shopping season without the benefit of having been able to plan for it months in advance or knowing what to expect. When you start a home business in January, you can ease into things at a manageable pace, and once the busy season rolls around you'll be prepared and know what to expect.
So if you've always wanted to test that limb, January is a great time to do it. You'll probably find that it's not as unstable as you thought. Starting your home business will be a rewarding and fulfilling way to start the New Year.
