Every day in your email you see the gaggle of spam emails promising thousands of dollars per day if you invest in a home based business. Scams and spam run rampant, so how do you choose the legitimate over the fake as your best home business opportunity?
The search can be quite simple if you know what to look out for.
1. Don't fall prey to the overnight success stories. It is true that some investments can create a great return on investment over the course of a few days. But those are very risky and you should never invest more than you're willing to lose.
2. Be very cautious when paying for information or start-up costs. Some scams have a comment within their terms of service saying you agree to pay a substantial amount within 30 days of purchasing information. Be sure to read the terms of service and privacy policy thoroughly.
3. Apply the old adage, "if it's too good to be true, it probably is." Legitimate home businesses require work. If you're looking for easy money, don't look at home business opportunities to provide that.
4. Beware of craft assembly jobs. More often than not, your assembled product won't meet the company's specifications. These companies don't make money by selling products. They make their money off of people looking for a business opportunity.
5. Stuffing envelopes or processing e-mails. This sounds easy enough. Process mail or e-mail and make money. These work-at-home jobs are actually entertaining to read about. You respond to an ad and receive an e-mail or ad in the mail offering information about starting your own business or working from home. All you have to do is pay as little as $5. There are a surprising number of people who will pay $5 for the information. The informational package you receive is an exact copy of the ad you replied to and instructions on posting it to other sites or forums.
6. Medical billing from home. Most doctor offices either process their own billing or outsource it to reliable billing companies. Usually the information and list of potential clients is outdated or incorrect.
7. Multi-Level Marketing. While some Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) companies are legitimate, others most certainly are not. If you're asked to "sign up" using someones referral link, it's probably an MLM. These types of MLM schemes are often called "pyramid schemes." There's a very big possibility you will lose everything you've invested.
8. Don't pay for lists. There are a lot of ads that promise 100 to 1000 or more companies that are legitimate home businesses with low start up costs. What you'll likely receive is a list of places to spam the same message you responded to.
9. Steer clear of calling 900 numbers for more information. All 1-900 numbers generally come with a substantial price tag.
10. Everywhere you look, you see ads that read "If you have a computer, let us show you how to turn it into a virtual ATM" or something similar. Much like the scams already mentioned, this is not a legitimate home based business or work at home opportunity. In most cases, you will receive an information kit showing you how to become a spammer.
Just remember, there are no get-rich-quick schemes of a legitimate nature; only schemes - and chances are better than good that you will not be the one to profit from them. There are no free lunches, even on the Internet. If you wish to start and develop a successful home business, then be prepared to roll your sleeves up and get to work.
