Ironically one of the reasons a parent wants to work at home is one of the things that ends upholding them back from being successful. I am talking about balancing your home life, family life, and work all out of the same building.
As your business grows you may feel like it gets to be to much at some time. When that happens remember what it was like when you had to get up and drive to work everyday. That should jar you back to the reality of how good you have it now.
Still there is no doubt that children can be a distraction for parents working at home. Here are a few ways around that.
1. Set up a home office that means when you are in it you are at work.
2. Keep the children busy. When children have idle time they get in trouble. Especially if there are more than one about the same age at home. Many times you may end up being a referee more than a parent who is actually making money and getting their work done.
3. Work before they get up. If you have a business that allows you to work whenever you want then get some work done when they are asleep. An Internet business is great for this because the Internet never sleeps. You can work on it 24 hours a day.
4. If both of you work at home then split shifts. When one is in the office the other is out watching and taking care of the children.
5. You may have to hire a baby sitter to come in and take care of the children when you are working. This is a cost of doing business and if it allows you to be more productive it is probably worth the price.
6. Remember why you wanted to stay at home in the first place. children are a joy that grow up and leave. Sometimes you are better off to get away from the home office and do something with them.
7. Spend quality time. Schedule a day at the zoo followed by pizza. Or how about taking an afternoon at the movies. When it is scheduled it is looked more forward to by all of you.
8. Have breakfast together. By providing your undivided attention first thing in the morning you will buy yourself more time later on to get your work done.
9. Schedule your time around them. If they nap in the afternoon get more done then. If they go to school relax and know that you have to drive both ways and the time in between needs to be very productive.
10. Involve your children in the business. Even children at a young age are amazing on a computer. Depending on the type of work you do at home you may be able to get them involved. Even paying them can provide a tax benefit worth checking into.
11. Keep yourself flexible. Take your children to the park and bring along a little work if the need be. You can both be happy at the same time.
12. There are 24 hours in a day and you may just have to structure your time differently. The end of the day offers a couple of hours to work at home when the children are asleep. You can, and should, use this time to plan your next day also.
Hopefully these tips will help you if you are a parent working at home. Even when it does not feel like it you are very lucky compared to a mom or dad who would like to stay at home and work and can not.
